Yucca glauca or Soapweed are native to Central North America from southern Canada through the Great Plains to Texas and New Mexico. An evergreen, very hardy herbaceous plant that is grown for its distinctive, narrow sword shaped, grey green leaves, spikes of attractive, large, cream coloured pendant flowers in late summer and its excellent resistance to drought conditions. In its native America it has many uses. Yucca glauca was a traditional Native American medical plant. The seed pods are boiled and used for food. Leaves are made into brushes and used for decorating pottery, ceremonial masks, altars and other objects, soaked in water to soften them and made into rope by knotting them together, dried and split, plaited and made into water carrying head pads and also used for making mats, cincture pads and other articles. The peeled roots are pounded, made into suds and used for washing the head, wool garments and blankets and the young flower stalks and unripe fruits can be cooked and eaten. Easy to grow in full sun in most free draining soils including chalky soils. Makes a very good container plant. Use a good quality compost to which 20% by volume of horticultural grit or sharp sand has been added to improve drainage and make sure the container has sufficient drainage holes. A hungry plant is a poor performer, so we recommend Osmocote Pro 12-14 month is added to the compost. One application provides sufficient nutrients for a whole year.
