Yucca filamentosa commonly called Adam?s needle Spanish bayonet or Yucca is a wonderful plant for that sub-tropical effect. Striking virtually stemless evergreen shrub (though it looks more like a perennial than a shrub) that is native to beaches, sand dunes and fields from South Carolina south to Florida Mississippi and Mexico. Yucca filamentosa Color Guard is a gold-centered variegated form which has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It features a basal rosette and has wide rigid sword-shaped spine-tipped leaves up to 0.75cm long and up to 100mm wide with green margins and striking creamy gold centers. Long filamentous (as per species name) curly white threads are found along the leaf margins. In late spring, even on quite young plants a flowering stalk rises from the center of each rosette typically to 1.5 - 2mtrs tall, bearing long terminal panicles of nodding bell-shaped fragrant creamy white flowers. Fruits are elliptical dehiscent capsules. This plant can be used in a mixed planting, or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Add a minimum of 20% horticultural grit to aid drainage. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year. Avoid wet locations and protect from the harshest frosts.
