Taxus baccata is one of the widest planted of the Yews. A familiar site in many church yards and gardens, both private and public. A slow growing, evergreen conifer, capable of growing on any soil, even almost pure chalk, or very acid and of extreme longevity. In one of our local church yards there is a Taxus baccata known to be around 1100 years old and in 2016 a 4,112 year old yew tree, dating back to the Bronze Age, was found flourishing in Turkey at Gumeli! Taxus baccata Fastigiata Aurea or Golden Irish Yew, was discovered around 1888 and is a splendid tree. A very strictly fastigiate (columnar) shape with bright yellow new growth, giving this tree a truly stately, formal appearance. As a female form it can produce bright red stromboli which are very popular with birds but poisonous to livestock. Very robust and adaptable, superb in many different locations. Can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost with added course peat or other organic material as this plant will be there a long time and pure peaty types of compost eventually degrade, become too packed and choke the roots. Ensure you keep them well watered and feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients plant requires for the whole year. John Innes is a soils based compost. Very well established, multi branched approx 15 - 20cm tall exc. the pot
