Vermiculite is a light weight, flaky material that is produced from a group of hydrated, laminar magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate minerals resembling mica. These are heated to high temperatures until they expand to many times their original size. Vermiculite is neither acidic or alkaline and is long lasting. It has excellent water retention properties and is mainly used in horticulture as a compost additive. It can very effectively be used as a cover when sowing seeds, where its high water retention and aeration qualities provide an excellent micro environment for germination. Mix Vermiculite with composts or composted pine bark to make your own seed/cutting and potting composts, where the properties of Vermiculite will promote faster root growth and reduce the need for watering. Add a controlled release fertiliser to potting composts. When rooting difficult cuttings, such as Daphne, it can be used to good effect without compost, however it is important to ensure you do not over wet the Vermiculite. As soon as roots are established a weak liquid feed should be applied as Vermiculite does not contain any nutrients. As a starting point we would recommend using a 50-50 mix of Vermiculite with the other substrate, but gardeners can experiment with different mixes to obtain best results. Vermiculite is also an excellent material for the storage of tubers, bulbs and other root crops. Lift the crop, allow to dry a little and cover with Vermiculite. Store in a dry, frost free location and ensure a minimal amount of moisture is maintained. Purely for interest, Vermiculite is also used in hydroponic culture, egg incubation, as a substrate for fungi cultivation, construction boards, concrete screeds, insulation, fire protection, explosive storage, waste treatment and many other uses. This listing is for two grades of Vermiculite, fine and medium. In general terms use the fine grade for seeds and smaller cuttings and medium for potting mixes and larger cuttings.
