Polystichum setiferum Herrenhausen - Soft Shield Fern - Plant in 2 L Pot

Ferns are a delight for any garden that can provide their basic requirements. They fill that space that few other plants will thrive in and at the same time bring colour and form to please. A small amount of sun early or late in the day will not harm but may darken the colour of the foliage. Polystichum setiferum Herrenhausen is native to Germany and is highly recommended for its lacy effect. In Shield Ferns the pinnae nearest the stalk are mitten shaped. Unlike the Hard Shield Fern, where the fronds and leaves are stiff, the Soft Shield is lax and soft. Pinnules mostly unstalked or with short "stalk" which is simply a narrowing of the pinnule. Much more shiny in appearance than most ferns, having a very sleek and classy look. A very attractive fern. Fronds exposed to the stronger light are sometimes pale green, but mostly they are darker green especially those in shady crevices. Perfers a semi to full shade location. Unusually for ferns, Polystichum setiferum Herrenhausen is a fern that requires a neutral soil although it will tolerate slight acidity and alkalinity. Can be grown very successfully in pots and containers. Use a good quality neutral to alkaline compost. Ferns generally require a constant feed of nutrients so please ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8 - 9 month applied in the early spring as growth begins. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
