Metasequoia glyptostroboides Goldrush is an upright, narrowly conical conifer of superb architectural value and has very deservingly been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. One of only five genus of deciduous conifers, it's very striking foliage emerges as delicate sprays of chartreuse yellow, maturing to golden yellow in summer and lovely rich shades of orange brown in autumn. In mature trees a heavily buttressed trunk with rugged stringy bark develops. Plant in a sunny or semi-shade location in any soil. Can be planted as a marginal plant or even in shallow water. If you like the beauty of the deep mahogany coloured trunk and the graceful highly cut leaves do not prune. Can be grown in a pot or other container, which will limit its size. Use a good quality compost. These plants will grow better in slightly acid soil. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer.
