Hydrangea macrophylla Ayesha - Hydrangea - Plant in 10.5 cm Pot
These are second year plants that are very well established. They have multiple shoots and can be planted out or repotted soon after receipt, or held in the pot they arrive in until spring.
Hydrangea macrophylla; perhaps one of the best known garden plants. Originally from Japan these robust and reliable plants produce a truly amazing display in summer and autumn. Ayesha has a different flower form. When it was first released after World War II it caused quite a stir and still does. Its character is created by the cupped sepals (modified flower petals) that resemble little spoons. In addition to the charming flowers, Ayesha is one of the few fragrant Hydrangeas. To this day Ayesha is a special Hydrangea. In alkaline soils the flowers open a charming light baby pink with whiter centers, maturing to rich mid pink. In acid soils the flowers are a bluish colour. Ayesha is best grown as a pink variety in alkaline soils. Treatment with bluing agent can help produce blue flowers however this is much more successful in pots than in the borders. Very easy to grow in a slightly shaded location in most reasonable quality, moist soils. It can be grown in the garden or in a pot or container. In containers, use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
