Ginkgo biloba Princeton Sentry is a cultivar introduced in 1965 by Princeton Nurseries USA. A tall columnar, male tree, so no smelly fruit, (or can be used as a pollinator!) but just as beautiful as the species, with distinct fan shaped mid green leaves that shimmer and flutter in the wind, turning bright golden yellow in autumn they add more than just a touch of colour to any park or garden. Ginkgo are remarkable and beautiful trees, living fossils of great ornamental botanical and geographical interest. The species trees dating back over 200 million years have survived unchanged and are the only remaining member of their family. Long believed extinct, until a small surviving population was discovered some 175 years ago in China probably in Zhijiang or Anhui provinces, they are now a very popular tree world wide. Regarded as a sacred tree in the far east Ginkgo are frequently planted adjacent to Buddhist shrines and are widely used in complementary medicine in many countries. Ginkgos are resistant to most diseases and insect attacks with unusual powers of regeneration, even in older trees, which has undoubtedly been one of the reasons for their remarkable survival. Some trees in China are reputed to be as much as 2500 years old. It is thought to have significant medicinal properties and is a tree of considerable beauty. As one example of the considerable botanical interest they have acquired Ginkgo trees do not produce pollen as in the more developed higher orders of plant species but instead produce a motile (moving) sperm that have flagellating cilla which carry them to the female receptacle. This is one of the most beautiful of trees. Can be grown in the garden or in a park or estate as a specimen plant. Can also be grown in a pot or other container which will help limit its size. Do not allow to dry out. Pruning is not generally necessary.
