Originally from Japan, this geographical form was introduced from China around 1907. Chinensis forms a more open plant than the species type, with larger leaves and flowers. A very beautiful small garden tree. Flowers are produced in abundance in spring and are formed in upturned, white single bracts, flushing pink with age, along the tops of the branches. In autumn the leaves turn to an amazing burgundy red and small inedible strawberry like fruits cling to the branches. Easy to grow in most fertile, moist but free draining soils in full sun or semi shade. A beautiful sight in any garden! Ideal for small or large gardens and is often grown in a pot. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
