Chimonanthus praecox - Winter Sweet - Plant in 2 L Pot
Chimonanthus praecox, Winter Sweet, is a very hardy, deciduous shrub that was introduced from China as long ago as 1766. It is closely associated with the ancient Chinese capital of Xian, the home of the Terracotta Army, where it represents resilience and quiet strength that aligns beautifully with Xi'an's legacy as a cradle of Chinese civilization. Gulin Park in Nanjing also has a famous mass planting of Chimonanthus praecox and in winter produces a truly amazing spectacle of beauty and fragrance. Chimonanthus praecox is a must for the winter garden; preferably on a sunny wall to increase the number of flowers. The flowers are an unusual "claw" shape; bright yellow with purple centres and wreathed along the bare branches. The fragrance is strong and unusual, but delightful, perhaps best described as sweet and spicy. Easy to grow in full sun in almost any moist, free draining soil, including chalky ones. Chimonanthus praecox can be grown in a border or container. If you grow in a container, use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 12-14 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
