Cercidiphyllum japonicum - Katsura Tree - Plant in 2 L Pot
Please note this listing is for plants pruned to be grown as multi stem , large shrubs or trees.
Cercidiphyllum japonicum is native to China and Japan and was introduced into the Uk around 1880. In the Uk it will grow as a small deciduous tree but is also often pruned to remain a large shrub. Granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit this is a beautiful plant which will provide interest for most of the year, and especially so in autumn. As a tree it grows with a rounded, conical crown. In spring and summer attractive heart shaped leaves flutter and dance in the breeze. In spring, its leaves emerge pinkish bronze, with distinct veins and gradually turn to a lush green in summer. Autumn brings brilliant displays of orange yellow and red and the quality for which the Katsura tree is probably best known, the strong, delicious smell of sweet burnt sugar that the falling leaves give off. This fragrance is strong enough to be detectable quite a few metres from the tree. A lovely tree or shrub and easy to grow in a semi shade or sunny location in most soils with plenty of moisture. The best autumn colours are usually produced when planted in acidic soils. Will happily grow on the margins of water. Neither the flowers or fruits are particularly significant. If growing in a pot or other container, use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous and can be grown in ordinary compost, however they will provide give better autumn colour in acidic soil. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
