PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Canna are wide spread across the tropics and are cultivated in many temperate gardens. Although commonly referred to as a Lily they are not Lilies, but are the sole members of their own genus, Cannaacea and are related to Bananas and Gingers. In the tropics they are frequently grown for the food value of the tubers, however here we use them for their huge, tropical, beautifully coloured leaves. Some of the latest cultivars, such as the Tropicana series, have also been bred for their exotic and colourful flowers. A superb summer garden plant for border or patio that can be kept from year to year if the tubers are protected from frost and wet. Best lifted, cleaned and stored in a dry, cool, frost free location with just a little moisture. Canna Tropicanna Black has splendid broad, near black foliage, which is suffused with traces of plum and red. Stems of dazzling scarlet flowers that contrast wonderfully with the dark foliage, fading to orange as they age, are produced from June to September. Really, a very striking plant. Easy to grow in full sun in most fertile soils. In the main growing season will luxuriate in wet soils but must be almost dry and frost free in winter. It is therefore best to lift and store the tubers over winter. This plant can be used as a specimen, in groups, in a mixed planting or a container. If planting in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 5-6 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
Please Note: This Canna does not produce abundant stems in the same way as Canna Tropicanna, however this is a large and robust plant and requires more space to develop, we therefore grow these in 3 L pots. In November we remove the old foliage and flower stems so the plant you receive will be cut back to almost pot level, ready to grow away in the spring.

Please remember when purchasing from us that we are not a garden centre. In general garden centres sell a range of seasonal plants, that are sold for a limited period of time, when they look at their best. We are a nursery and offer you plants as near to an all year-round basis as possible. This means that at different times of year plants will not look at their best. In winter some may just be a pot of roots, in summer many will have been pruned and in autumn deciduous plants will have leaves that are dying and this will often mean they are mis-coloured and diseased, both natural ingredients of the process of decay and eventually renewal. All our plants have a one year, no quibble guarantee, from the date of order, so in the very unlikely event your poorly looking plant bought in autumn or winter (or in the case of some varieties, in summer) does not flourish in its main growing season, you are protected!
