Betula utilis var. Jacquemontii - Silver Birch - Plant in 1L Pot
Betula utilis var. Jacquemontii , (also known as var. Doorenboos) West Himalayan Birch, often called Silver Birch, is one of the most popular, small, deciduous trees. Its exact history appears to have been lost in antiquity, but most likely it was discovered in its natural habitat in Northern India, Kashmir and west and central Nepal centuries ago. Widely grown for its beautiful white bark, that appears on the main trunks and larger branches, it makes an excellent feature when planted singularly or in groups. It is possible to wash the bark with soapy water to maintain its lustre, however it is renewed every year when the bark peels! Can only be reliably reproduced by vegetative propagation. Seedling almost always have a bark colour that is nowhere near the quality of Jacquemontii. These plants are therefore cutting raised. Easy to grow in a full sun or dappled shade location in most soils, except chalky soils, where it will not reach its full potential. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in an eventually large pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires.
