The original Berberis thunbergii were introduced from Japan around 1864. There are now over 500 different species/cultivars, in many shapes, sizes and colours. Over the years they have become one of the most planted of all shrubs. Berberis thunbergii Orange Ice is a relatively new dwarf cultivar, bred in Poland and a real gem among the modern Berberis varieties. It has a columnar growth habit. Depending on the light conditions and age of the foliage, it subtly alters colours between red and sensational orange hues with each leaf being edged in gold.
