The original Berberis thunbergii were introduced from Japan around 1864. There are now over 500 different species/cutlivars, in many shapes, sizes and colours. Over the years they have become one of the most planted of all shrubs. Berberis thunbergii Bagatelle is probably the finest of the dwarf purple foliaged varieties with its ultra compact habit and superb dark foliage, with cherry red new growths from spring to autumn. In spring, just as the leaves begin to emerge, it produces small, dainty yellow flowers, followed by deep red berries. The leaves turn a lovely reddish purple in autumn before falling away for winter. In sun or semi shade and most soils, this easy to grow variety makes a great addition to any planting scheme where the leaf colour is in the design. Superb as a contrast in plantings with other yellow leaved Berberis where it should be positioned towards the front of the border. This plant can be used in a mixed planting or as a stand alone specimen in the garden or can easily be grown in a pot. When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality compost. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8 - 9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires for the whole year.
