Acer palmatum Atropurpureum - Japanses Maple, Plant in 9cm Pot
Native to Japan China and Korea the Acer palmatums were introduced from Japan around the middle 1800's. Acer palmatums have to be among the most beautiful of all our garden trees. Acer palmatum Atropurpureum is a superb, elegant, small tree with deeply lobed, purple foliage throughout the spring and summer. In the autumn, the foliage turns vivid crimson red, creating a wonderful seasonal effect. In winter the structure of the tree brings grace to the garden. While the flowers are small, attractive, red, typical Acer, winged fruits appear in autumn. Please note that 'Atropurpureum' will show slight differences in leaf size, shape and colour from plant to plant. Really a very beautiful tree and ideal for patios, general planting and gardens where space is limited. Very popular as a Bonsai subject. Prefers a dappled shade location in moist, fertile, acid to neutral soil. If growing in a pot or other container, use a good quality ericaceous compost. These plants are not ericaceous and can be grown in ordinary compost however they will grow better and give better colour in neutral to acid soil. Ensure you feed regularly as a hungry plant is a poor performer. We recommend Osmoscote pro 8-9 month applied in the early spring. One application gives all the nutrients the plant requires.
